Bank Holiday Monday weather forecast: The weekend kicks off with sunny spells before a washout

Coral's John Hill said: "The early outlook for June is positive and that has prompted a flurry of bets for a record hot month in the UK.

"With the threat of heavy downpours later in the bank holiday weekend, the odds have been trimmed for a record wet May, however, they also indicate temperatures could still rise in the high 20s.

"The mercury is set to hit sizzling highs of 30C (86F) in June, according to forecasts."

But the weather this Bank Holiday weekend looks set to take a turn for the worse.

RAINY MONDAY

Rain will gradually affect Scotland and Northern Ireland tomorrow and go into the evening.

It will stay dry further South, but will become cloudy in places.

The Midlands will wake up to rainy conditions tomorrow.

Temperatures across the country will range between the high teens and low twenties, according to the Met Office.

But the changeable weather conditions mean many will see rain at some point during the long weekend.

SHOWERS SWEEP IN

No one will be safe from the showers - with some spots seeing heavy downpours at times.

Cloud and rain will gradually be pushing south-eastwards throughout the weekend.

And cooler conditions will make it a grim start to the last week of spring.

By Monday, forecasters have warned temperatures will be "cooler with sunshine and showers, some heavy".

An area of low pressure will slowly move in from the Atlantic, bringing cloudy outbreaks of rain.

Showers will be the heaviest in the North and West, but many in the South can also expect rain.

The Met Office said there is likely to be "sunshine and showers for most places" over the three-day break.

They added: "The temperature will be pleasant but not quite as high as we have been seeing."

The gloomy weather will be in stark contrast to the Spring Bank Holiday last year - where most of the country enjoyed warm sunshine.

But Britain could probably do without a repeat of the flash floods and thunderstorms seen in parts of southern England in the wake of the 2018 heatwave.

The soaring temperatures come after the UK fried during last year's record-breaking summer - with a repeat of the high mercury on the cards.
